Description

West Bridge, opened in 1891, is a wide bridge featuring two channels. It has stone abutments and cast iron arches that are not visible from below, supported by iron girders. The arches are designed with four-centred shapes and decorated spandrels featuring trefoil and quatrefoil motifs. Above the arches is a cornice adorned with Tudor roses. The bridge has a heavy cast iron railed parapet, and at each end, there are ashlar octagonal turrets topped with ogee-shaped domes that include crockets, finials, crenellation, and carved heads. The central ashlar cutwater rises to form a castellated refuge. The bridge spans the River Soar, which is canalised in this area.
