Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built between 1884 and 1885 by Joseph Goddard of Goddard, Paget and Catlow. It is constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings and bands, topped with a steep-pitched tile roof featuring a slender fleche. The church has no tower but boasts a very tall nave with tall plate-traceried windows. There is a short transept with small rose windows and low passage aisles.
Inside, the church has a notable interior made of yellow brick and ashlar, featuring a segmental arcade to the aisle passages and an arcade above the gallery at the west end. The timber roof adds to the character of the space. The east end includes low open galleries supported by a trefoil arcade. This church was commissioned by Miss Sarah Barlow and had a total cost of £8,500, with £1,000 of that amount for the land, which was funded through public subscription.
