Description

A pair of town houses, dating to around 1820, now used as flats and offices. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Welsh slate roof. They are three storeys high and have a 1:3 bay arrangement. The front of the buildings features an ashlar plinth and a band at the first floor level. The windows are primarily 16-pane sashes with projecting stone sills and cambered, grooved, wedge lintels; the second floor windows are 8-pane sashes.

Number 3 York House has a symmetrical design. The central doorway has ogee foot-scraper holes in the plinth and a six-panelled door with a margin-glazed overlight, set within a reeded wooden architrave, topped by a flat hood supported on brackets. Number 4 has matching foot-scrapers and a door but with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars within a sunken-panelled wooden architrave, including an archivolt, impost blocks and a keyblock. The ground floor window at number 4 is offset to the left. An ashlar cornice runs along the entire facade, and there are broad end stacks and a ridge stack on the party wall.

The rear of number 4 is shallower and has a variety of sash windows, as well as an ovolo-moulded eaves cornice. The interior of number 3 retains an original staircase with square rods to a wreathed handrail that curves at the half-landing. The interior of number 4 was not fully inspected.
