Description
The monument to John Gregory Pike, located in the General Cemetery, was built in 1854 and is made of ashlar stone. It stands on a two-step square base and features an octagonal shape with a chamfered plinth. Each face of the monument has a pointed arch arcade with columns and moulded capitals in between. The central face is inscribed with "In memory of JOHN GREGORY PIKE/ Born April 6th 1784/ Died September 4th 1854". The left face reads, "Founder of the General Baptist Missionary Society/ Author of 'Persuasions to Early Piety' and other valuable works". The right face states, "Pastor of the church meeting in St Mary's Gate Chapel, forty-four years". At the top, there is a deep chamfered and moulded cornice, leading to a tall octagonal spire that has a single large lucarne on each face.
