Description
The monument to Thomas Skevington, located in the General Cemetery, was erected in 1877. It is made of Portland stone with polished red granite dressings and features cast iron elements. The monument has a square base consisting of four steps that support low coped walls, which are topped with ornate iron railings and corner piers adorned with red granite half spheres.
The square monument features red granite columns at each corner that support pointed arches, which are topped with gables. The south-west front is inscribed with the words: "In affectionate remembrance of THOMAS SKEVINGTON, who died July 17th 1877 aged 58, also of FELICIA wife of the above who died Nov 3rd 1885, aged 64 years." Other faces of the monument record the burials of Thomas Robert, son, who died in 1879, Maria, who died in 1880, John, who died in 1881, and Emma Maria, who died in 1926. Each gable is decorated with crockets and finials, and a square spire rises behind the gables.
