Description
Barrow's Almshouses, located on West Road in Spondon, were built in 1873 and have undergone minor alterations in the 20th century. They were constructed for Mr. Barrow using red and blue brick, with painted ashlar dressings. The building features a slate roof and four stacks with ashlar coping, and it consists of nine bays over one and a half stories.
The central bay is gabled and slightly projects forward, featuring a central doorway with 20th-century double doors and a raised strapwork hood. This doorway is flanked by single light windows that extend above the hood. Above the doorway is a pointed arch that contains a memorial panel dated 1873.
On either side of the central bay, there are slightly projecting gabled bays, each containing pairs of panel doors beneath wooden bracketed lean-to hoods. Above these doors are pairs of two-light casements, with 20th-century casements inserted above. Further out on either side are additional two-light casements, again with 20th-century casements above. All original openings are framed with chamfered, painted ashlar surrounds.
