Description

1-12, The Square consists of two three-storey terraced ranges of houses built facing each other across a square, linked by a similar range in West Row. Constructed in 1792 by the Evans family, these houses were originally intended for mill workers. They are built of red brick with slate roofs, the roofs being hipped at the east end. A brick header dentil course runs along the eaves, and the windows have been altered. The houses are among the earliest buildings constructed by the Evans family at Darley Abbey. The group of 18th and 19th century houses and schoolrooms built or acquired by the Evans family for their workers is notable for its historic significance, particularly when considered alongside the settlements established by Richard Arkwright at Cromford and Jedediah Strutt at Belper and Milford.
