Description

This is a Christian Science church built between 1934 and 1938, with subsequent alterations. Constructed from brick with flat concrete roofs, the building features a cruciform central hall plan. The street frontage is dominated by a central lobby with three round-headed windows set within round arches, using metal-framed glazing bar windows. Recessed porches, set back either side, have chamfered corners and deeply set round arches containing double panel doors and large fanlights, also with metal glazing. The two-window blocks to either side are set back further, with square windows in recessed panels, the left-hand block having been altered to incorporate a display window for a reading room. Behind the central hall is a tall block with chamfered corners and three tall round-headed windows, flanked by lower side wings with blind stepped fronts. The side façades of these wings each have three tall square-headed windows, all with similar metal-framed glazing.

The interior retains original features throughout. The central hall retains galleries, pews, reading desks on a raised platform, fine wooden panelling and doorcases, decorative plasterwork, and original light fittings. The lobby also features contemporary doors, doorcases, and light fittings.
