Description

The First Church of Christ Scientist is a Christian Science Church built in 1928 by E Braxton Sinclair, showcasing an inventive Neo-Classical style with brickwork and doors that evoke the look of Art-Deco cinemas. The original design included a projected Sunday school, which was not constructed; instead, a 1961 building was added that is not of special interest. The church is built on a steel frame and is clad in brown brick with red brick dressings.

The central hall is chamfered and tall, featuring a large entrance with lower service rooms surrounding it. The hall has two parapets, with the lower one adorned with a cornice and stone coping. Giant pilasters separate the window bays, and there are three metal casements on the front that incorporate stylized pilasters in their design. A large brick portico is supported by four rusticated brick columns in antis, topped with a cornice and a stone tablet inscribed with 'FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST BROMLEY KENT'. The entrance features three double lined oak doors, flanked by fluted wooden pilasters and iron grilles with a wave pattern.

The rear elevation includes a tall projection flanked by octagonal windows, and there are one-storey brick offices on all sides. Rainwater heads with a rose pattern are dated 1928. Inside, the church has an oval foyer with semicircular roof lights, oak doors, and Hepton wood stone floors. The auditorium contains oak pews and a platform with a panelled pilastered rear wall featuring two tapering fluted oak reading desks. Above this area is a pilastered feature with a decorative metal grille, and original hanging lamps are present. The ceiling is divided into small compartments and features a heavy cornice along with Art-Deco inspired grille work.
