Description
The Central Library, located on Tweedy Road in Bromley, was built in 1878 and 1894. It is a long, narrow, asymmetrical building that stands two storeys high with attics. The exterior is made of red brick, featuring lighter red brick window surrounds and decorative yellow brick diaper work. The building has four gabled projections that do not contain windows, adorned with terracotta moulded Neo-Jacobean decorations.
On the first floor, there are three double sash windows and decorative terracotta panels that represent the Kent County symbol as well as the arts and sciences. The ground floor features thirteen cambered sash windows. The entrance is framed by a pedimented door surround. At the right side corner, there is a cupola topped with a weathervane and surrounded by balustrading. Above the entrance on this corner, a clock is positioned beneath a curved pediment supported by Tuscan columns.
