Description
These are a row of eight consecutive houses, built in 1792, along with a range of six privies opposite them. Constructed by the Evans family and completed by 1792, the houses are brick-built, rendered, and painted, with slate roofs that are hipped at the returns to connect with The Square to the east. They feature pegged door frames and a brick header dentil course at the eaves. The houses are three storeys high and form three sides of an open square, with a continuous ridge line, while West Row faces outwards to the west. The row of privies, built contemporaneously, is single-storied, brick-built, and retains original external details and joinery. The houses and other 18th and 19th century houses and schoolrooms in Darley Abbey, built or acquired by the Evans family for their workers, are notable as a group, offering a comparison with the Arkwright settlement at Cromford and the Strutt settlements at Belper and Milford.
