Description
Nos 6 and 7 Iron Gate are late 19th-century buildings designed in the Gothic style. They are constructed of stone and rise to four storeys. The first storey features an arcade with six pointed and cusped arched windows, supported by columns with foliated capitals. The third storey has two sets of two mullioned windows with arched heads. The second storey includes a continuous balcony supported by figure head corbels and topped with iron brattishing. Pilasters extend over the second and third storeys, and there is a moulded eaves cornice topped by an open balustrade. The ground floor has a modern office front.
At the rear of the building are the fragmentary remains of a much-altered Moot Hall, which is believed to have been built around 1610 to replace an earlier hall. This Moot Hall is thought to have been used for public and guild meetings until the mid-18th century, after which it was altered and enlarged for industrial and warehouse purposes in the 19th century.
