Description

The summer house, also known as a menagerie, is located approximately 100 metres west of Middle Lake and 75 metres north of the boundary wall in Nostell Park. It is likely from the late 18th century and may have been designed by Robert Adam. The structure is built from rendered handmade brick with sandstone dressings, and its roof is not visible.

The building has a cruciform plan, consisting of a two-cell main range where the front cell is octagonal and the rear cell is rectangular, with small side wings attached to the front cell. It is designed in the Gothick style and is a single storey. The symmetrical southeast facade features a canted centre with a central two-centred arched doorway that has a rusticated long-and-short surround, double doors, and a Y-traceried fanlight. There is a window on each canted side that matches the style of the doorway. The facade is topped with a moulded cornice and a low embattled parapet adorned with trefoils.

The slightly lower single-bay wings on either side of the front cell have two-centred arched doorways at both the front and rear, with coved niches on either side. The right-hand wing contains a wooden two-seater earth closet, while the left may have also served as a privy. The rear cell has a blocked doorway on the east side and a two-centred arched window on the west side, along with a square window above and a parapet similar to the front.

Inside, the front cell features Gothick-style arcaded panels, a fireplace in the rear wall with an ogival overmantel, and coved cupboards on the left and a doorway on the right. The ceiling is rib-vaulted, and the floor is made of diamond-pattern stone flags. It is believed that the building may contain or cover an ice house.
