Description
Nostell Bridge is a public road bridge that carries the Doncaster-Wakefield road over a lake in Nostell Park. It was built in 1761, designed by Sir George Savile, and constructed by John Watson of Wakefield, who was the Surveyor of Bridges to the West Riding, along with John Croft of Calverley, the resident engineer of Aire and Calder Navigation. The bridge is made of sandstone ashlar and features five elliptical arches that rise towards the center. Triangular cutwaters are positioned at half-height, transitioning into pilasters, with a roll-moulded band running between them. The bridge has a low parapet topped with modern iron railings. Beneath each arch, there is a weir, with a sluice located in the central arch.
