Description
This barn, located approximately 20 meters to the north-west of Bullcliffe Farmhouse, dates back to the 16th century and has later cladding. It features a timber frame with rubble stone cladding and a stone slate roof. The barn has been reduced to four bays, with the right end formerly being an additional bay that had a lean-to roof. The south-east front includes a cart-entry in the second bay, which has double har-hung board doors under a cambered, large-scantling timber lintel, with 19th-century brick infill above. There are two doors to the right. The gable of the right return has later studding, while the left return has been rebuilt with a tall cart-entry and later studding in the gable.
Inside, the barn contains five trusses, with the left truss and the front posts embedded in the walling. The posts are jowelled and sit on padstones, with straight braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate. The king post trusses feature V-struts, and the king posts have trenched horizontal braces to the principal rafters, along with later wind braces. The trenched purlins have mostly been renewed, and there are early rafters present. The arcade plate has a tenoned scarf joint, and there are long ties from the posts to the wall plates. The principal rafters are of large scantling, with some having been replaced.
