Description

Thornes Pump, located at the junction of Denby Dale Road and Holmfield Lane, was built in 1827 over an old well. The well became contaminated and was sealed off, leaving only the plinth of the structure. The remaining plinth is octagonal and made of sandstone ashlar, with alternate sides concave above projections that have been hollowed out to form oval troughs. There are four steep steps leading up to the plinth, which shows traces of iron canopy supports. The sunk panels on the sides likely once held plaques.
