Description
This barn, located approximately 20 meters north-east of Mount Farmhouse, dates from around 1800 and is constructed from punch-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It may have originally been symmetrical and features a seven-bay roof. The front includes a segmental-arched cart-entry with skewbacks and composite jambs. Above this entry and in the flanking bays are square pitching holes with plain stone surrounds and shutters, while the ground floor openings are blind. The outer bay to the right has a stilted-arch mistal doorway with tie-stone jambs. The outer bay to the left has been altered to include a wide doorway with similar tie-stone jambs and a reinforced girder lintel, above which is disturbed stonework. The barn has a hipped roof.
The rear of the barn features a similar cart-entry as the front, along with mistal doorways at either end, both with tie-stone jambs and overlapping monolithic lintels. The walls show marks from a gabled horse-gin house that is no longer present, and there is evidence of gearing on the inner wall.
Inside, the barn has a good queen-post roof with posts pegged to the principal rafters, which are bolted through to the tie beams. The purlins are trenched and butt pegged, and the hips have dragon beams pegged to a Y-brace. The walls contain holes for beams, indicating the presence of former hay lofts at either end. This barn is included for its group value.
