Description

Orchard Cottage is a two-cottage dwelling, originally built in the early 18th century and subsequently altered. One section was later converted into a stable in the early 19th century and is now used as a single residence. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with stone slate roofs. It has a two-cell plan, with direct entry into each cell.

The left-hand cottage has quoins and two bays of windows with deep lintels to the left of a doorway, which also has a deep lintel. The first-floor windows have narrow lintels just under the eaves. A coped gable with kneelers is present on the left side, and there is a central ridge stack. The cottage on the right is slightly forward and taller. It also features quoins and two bays of 3-light, double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals on both floors. The right-hand window was altered when a tall central doorway was inserted to provide horse access to the stable, and has a semicircular-arched lintel with tie-stone jambs. The window has a projecting sill. A gable stack is located to the left.

At the rear, the two cottages are flush, with quoins marking the division between the two builds. A former doorway, now a window, on the left has a painted lintel reading "RYHILL POST OFFICE." Two doorways are present to the left (one blocked), both with wooden lintels, and there are two inserted first-floor windows. The right-hand return has a first-floor doorway with monolithic jambs, approached by a flight of three stone steps.

Internally, both cottages feature stop-chamfered spine beams of large scantling, and one cell of the left-hand cottage has a beamed ceiling with square cut joists.
