Description

Oddy’s Fold is a terrace of six quarry workers’ houses built in the early 19th century and altered in the 20th century. The houses are located on Parkside Road in Meanwood, Leeds. The construction uses coursed squared gritstone from a local quarry, identifiable by its herring-bone tooling, and has stone slate roofs.

The terrace is arranged in two blocks of three one-bay houses, with the roofline stepping downwards. The left block comprises numbers 3, 4, and 5, exhibiting a pattern of door, window, window, door, window, door. The right block, containing numbers 6, 7, and 8, follows a window, door, window, door, window, door sequence. Number 8 is currently occupied, while the remaining houses have boarded or breeze-blocked openings, except for number 3, which retains a likely original three-board door fitted with tapering, round-ended strap hinges.

The door surrounds are constructed of sawn stone with tie-stone jambs that slightly project. The windows feature large lintels incised to resemble voussoirs, set above projecting sills, and contain four- or eight-pane sashes. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

The terrace was likely built around 1810 for workers at the nearby Meanwood quarry, which opened in the early 18th century and supplied building stone for 19th-century construction projects in Leeds, including Mill Hill Chapel and Park Row, as well as national projects such as the Royal Dockyards.
