Description
Tannery Square, located on Green Road in Meanwood, consists of a row of eight cottages, now converted into five houses, built between 1834 and 1837 by John Morris of Woodside. The buildings were restored and altered in 1975 and 1995. They are constructed from coursed squared gritstone with a slate roof and stand two storeys tall, featuring nine first-floor windows. The row was built in three stages with straight joins between them: No. 8 was originally a mirror-pair with entrances on the far left and right; Nos. 9 and 11 are similar, with a third cottage and a cart arch on the right; and No. 12 is another mirror-pair. All openings have plain stone surrounds, and the doors and window frames are from the 20th century. There are three large ashlar ridge stacks situated between each former cottage pair. The interior has not been inspected. John Morris, a local tanner, developed Tanner's Row on land purchased from Thomas Bumby. In 1846, the properties were acquired by Matthew Bywater, who then built Bywater Buildings, leading to Tanner's Row being renamed Tannery Square.
