Description
Grange Cottage is a house that was originally built around 1800 as the home of a paper mill owner. It underwent some additions around 1840 and has had alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with coped gables and two gable stacks. It has raised quoins and a first-floor sill band. The front of the house is two stories high with three windows. The central doorway has a moulded ashlar surround and a flat hood, along with a panel door and overlight. On either side of the doorway are single cross casements with raised ashlar surrounds, and above these are three similar windows. To the left, there is a set-back wing that includes a single-storey lean-to with two four-light windows and a set-back door, with three plain sashes above. The interior has not been inspected. This house was built for Thomas Martin, who leased the nearby mill in 1785 and converted it from a corn mill to a paper mill.
