Description
Meanwood School and School Master's House is a school and master's house built in 1840 for Christopher Beckett Esq of Meanwood Hall, designed in the Gothic Revival style. The building features ashlar stone with slate roofs and ashlar coped gables, along with a plinth and decorated corbels. The south front has a central single-storey, five-bay block with five deeply-recessed pointed-arch windows that include tracery and hoodmoulds. To the right, there is a linking wall topped with a coped parapet, featuring a single pointed-arch doorway flanked by single lancet windows, and beyond this is a single-bay gable end with a large four-light plate-tracery window in a pointed arch. To the left, set back, is a two-storey block with a pair of lancet windows and single lancets on either side, linked by a hoodmould, and above is a through-eaves dormer window. At the rear, there is a quadrangle with an octagonal bell tower and a plaque. The master's house consists of three bays and two storeys, featuring a chamfered first-floor band, a central doorway with a projecting porch and a pointed arch door, and single glazing-bar sash windows in chamfered surrounds with Tudor hoodmoulds on either side. Above, there are three gabled through-eaves dormer windows with glazing-bar sashes and a stone slate roof. The interior was not inspected and the building was in the process of restoration and extension at the time of the survey.
