Description
Tannery Square is a terrace of back-to-back cottages, now converted into flats, built between 1852 and 1860 by Matthew Bywater. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared gritstone with herringbone tooling and feature a slate roof. They are two storeys high and have nine first-floor windows. The original openings have been altered: three doorways have been changed to windows, two doorways are blocked, and one window has been modified to serve as a door. The buildings have plain sills and lintels, turned back kneelers, and two large ridge stacks located on the left and center, with a smaller stack positioned forward of the ridge on the right. The interior has not been inspected. Matthew Bywater acquired the land for these houses from Sir Thomas Beckett in 1852, constructing the back-to-back houses known as Bywater Buildings facing west and Tannery Square facing east. In 1872, Bywater's son sold the properties to Emma Jane Harden of Headingley. The cottages were renovated and converted into flats around 1975 and 1995. They are included for their group value.
