Description

This is a group of six monuments located in the corner of paths approximately 10 metres south-east of the Church of St. Oswald. The group includes two tomb chests dated 1720 and 1715, one headstone dated 1718, and three slabs dated 1680, 1740, and 1717, all made of sandstone.

The tomb chests feature sides constructed of large rectangular blocks and finely-lettered lids. The lid for Richard Driver, who died in 1720, has a moulded edge, while the lid for Joseph Driver, who died in 1715, has a border of two incised lines that scroll outwards at the corners. The headstone for David Rhodes, who died in 1718, is located very close to the west end of the latter tomb chest. It is round-arched and shouldered, with a moulded surround and a roundel at the head that encloses a flower, along with elegant lettering.

To the north and slightly east of these monuments is a memorial slab for William Baildon, who died in 1680. This slab features incised lettering in all capitals, a large sunk shield at the foot displaying three fleur de lys, and raised decorated initials "W" and "B" in sunk panels, all bordered by consecutive scrolls. Immediately next to the north side of this slab is the memorial for Anthony Smith, who died in 1740, which has a raised date in a sunk panel and a border of two incised lines that scroll outwards at the corners. Approximately 3 metres south-east of these is the slab for John Pollard, who died in 1717, which is similar in style to the lids of the two tomb chests.
