Description
This is a group of five monuments located in the angle between the chancel and vestry of the Church of St. Oswald in Guiseley. The group includes two tomb chests dated 1722 and 1790, as well as several slabs now set vertically against the wall. The slabs include one with an erased date, another dated 1708, and one dated 1772. All the monuments are made of sandstone.
The tomb chest for Ann Sergeant, who died in 1790, features panelled sides and a lid with incised arched decoration at the head. The tomb chest for Mary Holden, who died in 1722, has large block sides, a lid with an incised margin that is scrolled at the corners, a raised date in a sunk panel, and a raised decorated initial letter "H" in a sunk panel.
One slab, belonging to Christopher Brown, has an erased date but has a surround similar to that of Mary Holden's tomb. The slab for Thomas Brown, who died in 1772, is plain. The slab for Mr. Christopher Brown, who died in 1708, features a surround with very primitive Corinthian columns and a foliated arched head with a skull and cross-bones, along with elegant incised lettering.
