Description
No 2 Kirkgate is a building dating from around 1480, originally serving as a shop and warehouse. It features a former string course that defines its roof line and consists of two distinct sections, likely built in the early 19th century, although it has undergone significant alterations. The structure is three storeys high and constructed of stone, with one to three windows on the upper floors. The centre window has been altered, while the first floor has two windows that are hung sashes with glazing bars. There is a kneeler to the right, and the building has a modern shop front. The elevation facing Market Street includes a parapet and two windows, also with a modern shop front. This building is included in the listing primarily due to its role as a corner building within an important group of structures. Nos 2 to 8 (even) and Nos 20 and 22 form a group, and No 2 also groups with No 40 Market Place.
