Description

1-5 Hollywell Grove is a late 18th-century group of houses with 19th and 20th-century alterations, located in Upper Armley, Leeds. The buildings are constructed of coursed thin gritstone with stone slate roofs. The group comprises a pair of double-fronted houses (Nos. 2 and 3), which feature edge-tooled quoins, central doors with overlights in plain surrounds, and ground-floor paired sash windows. Most of the mullions from the original sash windows have been removed, and replaced with 20th-century casements. A first-floor sill band and a moulded eaves cornice are present, along with large ashlar stacks across the ridge of each property. Rear elevations show tall, narrow staircase windows above the entrances, and altered paired mullioned windows. To the left (No. 1) is an added bay with former sashes, stone sills, and lintels, and gable coping to the left end. To the right, at a right angle (Nos. 4 and 5) are a pair of later 19th-century houses with steeply-pitched stone slate roofs, stone sills and lintels, and paired sash windows which have also been replaced with 20th-century small-pane casements. The interior has not been inspected. The group was originally part of the Upper Armley mill complex, the majority of which has since been demolished.
