Description
The Star is a public house located at 205 Tong Road in Upper Wortley, Leeds. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building features painted brick construction and a tiled roof, standing two storeys high with a wide gabled frontage divided into three bays. The central entrance consists of a board door with an overlight and an architrave topped with a cornice. On either side of the entrance are large windows framed by pilasters and topped with a cornice. The first floor has two four-pane sash windows with stone sills and wedge lintels. Above, there is a band and coping that forms a pediment, featuring an oval window in a stone surround with painted glazing bars. A brick ridge stack is present, and there is a blocked doorway on the right side with a blind window above, also featuring wedge lintels.
Inside, the public house has panelled double outer doors and modern inner doors leading into a narrow passage. The public bar on the left retains wall benches, boarded walls, and a bar front, along with a blocked fireplace. The entrance passage leads to a replanned former hatch area, now the bar end, which has a black, brown, and white tiled floor dating from around 1870, and two rooms that are now open-plan. The rear room has wall benches and retains a cast-iron fireplace with raised decoration and a basket grate. There is a straight flight of stone steps leading to a cellar that is brick-lined and vaulted, featuring a barrel chute, wooden barrel stands, and bottle shelves.
The Star is a rare example of a roadside inn located at an important road junction, as Tong Road serves as a significant route between Leeds and Pudsey/Bradford.
