Description
This is a group of four monuments located approximately one meter south of the chancel of the Church of St. Peter. They date from the late 17th century and early 18th century and are made of sandstone. The monuments are arranged in a row from north to south as follows:
(i) The first slab commemorates Thomas Hird, who died in 1722, and his wife Mary, who died in 1728. It features a moulded border with scrolls at the corners, a raised decorated initial "H," and the raised and decorated date 1722 in a sunk panel.
(ii) The second slab is for Christopher Longbottam, who died in 1695. It has an incised border and a decorated initial "H."
(iii) The third slab honors Jeremiah, the fourth son of Thomas Hird, who died in 1717. It displays elegant lettering set within an arched architrave of primitive design, featuring large capitals and winged angel heads in the spandrels.
(iv) The fourth slab is for Thomas, the third son of Thomas Hird, who died in 1706. It is finely lettered and has a moulded border with scrolls at the corners.
