Description
This group of three raised tombs, dating from around 1691, 1715, and 1718, is located approximately 10 meters north of the Scatcherd Mausoleum. They are constructed from ashlar and consist of stone slabs set on raised panelled bases arranged in a row.
The tomb on the left belongs to "Mr. Henry Greathead of Gildersome," who died on July 5, 1718. It features highly decorative carvings and is considered one of the finest in the graveyard. The design includes sunken channelled pilasters with Ionic capitals, flanking a base that has a carved depiction of a skeleton holding an hour-glass, with a spade and pick on either side. Above this is the motto "finis miseriae mores." The top of the tomb is adorned with primitive flying angels supporting a crown over a skull, and below it is a sunken segmental arch decorated with spirals, acorns, and oak leaves.
The central tomb is dedicated to "Elizabeth, the wife of Matthew Scatcherd of Morley," who died on August 25, 1715, at the age of 84. The inscription is set within a simple raised surround with arrow-head corners.
The tomb on the right is for "Jane, the wife of Thomas Scatcherd of Morley," who died on September 4, 1691. This tomb features a decoratively-carved heart along with the date and initials.
