Description

Numbers 7 and 8 are two houses, now part of Leeds Metropolitan University, with area railings. They were built between 1815 and 1822 and altered in the late 19th century by architects John and George Bischoff. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof and feature iron railings.

The structure has two storeys above a basement, with No.7 being a narrow two-bay house on the left and No.8 a wider two-bay shop on the right. No.7 has two steps leading up to the entrance on the right, which features a six-panel door beneath a fanlight, set within a brick round arch that has an impost and keystone. The windows consist of a four-pane sash on the ground and first floors to the left, with stone sills and wedge lintels, and a small inserted window above the entrance.

No.8 has a similar entrance on the left, with radial glazing bars in the fanlight. To the right is a wide former shop window, which has a pedimented and fluted architrave that incorporates a glazed shop sign reading 'LYALL & REED'. Above, there are two boarded sash windows. The buildings also feature gutter brackets and end stacks.

The area railings include urn finials on the standards and spearhead finials on the rails. This property is part of a development by the Bischoffs that included thirteen houses along the northeastern side of Queen Square.
