Description

Numbers 13 and 14 are a pair of houses with attached railings, built between 1822 and 1831 and altered in the 20th century. They are constructed from red and brown brick in Flemish bond with rubbed brick details and feature a slate roof. The houses rise three storeys over a basement, with each house having three windows and an entrance on the right side. There are steps leading up to the door, which has a fanlight set in a plain stone surround with a keyed arch and imposts. The basement windows are segmental-arched, while the upper-floor window frames have been replaced, featuring stone sills and flat brick arches. The eaves are dentilled, and large multi-flue stacks sit on the ridge between the two properties.

At the rear, No. 13 has a semicircular bow window encased in wood, with the window frames replaced, and round-arched stair window openings that remain. The interior has not been inspected.

The surviving railings on the right side of No. 13 enclose the basement and flank the steps, featuring rails and standards topped with flower finials. This building is part of the first stage of Finsbury Square, which was constructed between 1822 and 1831 and is depicted on Fowler's map. Although the oval garden was created, the southern side of the square was never built.
