Description

Numbers 5 and 6 Blenheim Square are a pair of houses with attached railings, built between 1831 and 1839 and altered in the 20th century. They are part of a larger development, originally called Finsbury Square. The houses are constructed of red/brown brick in a Flemish bond, with rubbed brick details, and have a slate roof.

Each house is three storeys high, with a basement, and is three windows wide, with an entrance on the right-hand side. Steps lead up to the front door of each house, which is a six-panel door with roundels in the fanlight, set within a wooden surround in a keyed arch with imposts. The basement windows have segmental arches and 16 panes of glass. The upper windows are sash windows with glazing bars to the first floor, stone sills, and flat brick arches. Large multi-flue stacks are positioned on the ridge between the properties. The rear of Number 6 retains its original stair window.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

The attached railings are made of wrought iron and enclose the basement area, flanking the steps. They are constructed with alternating wavy and straight rails and have bud finials.

These houses represent one of three pairs built during the second phase of the terrace’s development. An oval garden was created but the terrace on the south side was never completed.
