Description

Numbers 3 and 4 are a pair of houses, now part of Leeds Metropolitan University, with area railings. They were built in the early 19th century and altered in the late 19th century. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone details and a slate roof, featuring iron railings. Each house has three storeys and three bays, designed as a mirrored pair with entrances in the outer bays. Stone steps lead up to a four-panelled door with a fanlight, set within a Tuscan surround that includes three-quarter columns, a fluted frieze, and an open segmental pediment. The windows have four-pane and plate-glass sashes, with a continuous sill band at the first floor, stone lintels, and sills. Gutter brackets and end stacks are also present. The interior has not been inspected. The railings consist of a low restored wall with column standards supporting plain railings that flank the steps. The frontage railings feature cup-and-cover finials on the standards and pierced finials on the rails. This building is part of a development by John and George Bischoff, with the northwest side constructed in two stages: two large houses with warehouses built in 1806, followed by three larger houses added between 1815 and 1822.
