Description
Nos 83 and 85 Roker Lane are a pair of back-to-back houses built around 1800. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a stone slate roof. The houses rise three storeys and have a double-depth, two-cell plan. The south front includes a central doorway with monolithic jambs, which is covered by an early 20th-century gabled glazed and timbered porch. The flanking bays each have a three-light flat-faced mullioned window with recessed mullions and a wider central sashed light on the ground and first floors, while the second floor has a two-light window. The gables are coped and feature ridge stacks.
On the rear, which faces the road, there is a doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a small arched window with a single light above on the second floor. Each flanking bay has a two-light window on every floor. The left-hand return has a wide first-floor doorway with monolithic jambs, which is accessed by a flight of 13 stone steps, and a two-light window above it on the second floor.
It is likely that this building was associated with textile manufacture, as it has an external door that may have led to a first-floor loom shop.
