Description

Otley Methodist Church, built around 1870, is an impressive town chapel constructed from fine ashlar stone. It features a monumental Italianate classical facade with five bays, showcasing a Palladian motif of interpenetrating pediments over the side bays and a three-bay central section that projects forward, topped with a heavy moulded and bracketed pediment. The ground floor has a three-bay arcade with archivolt arches supported by Doric columns set into the jambs, and panelled spandrels. Above this, a deep entablature and an applied parapet support coupled quoin pilasters that anchor the main entablature. The first floor has a triple arcade of windows, with the central window taller than the others, featuring coupled pilaster jambs and keyed archivolt arches. The pediment includes an oculus framed with scrolls, flanked by acroterions and topped with a crowning vase. The seven-bay side elevations are finished with rock-faced brick and a dentil cornice pediment, which also has a similarly framed oculus above the central three bays on each side.

Inside, the church boasts a fine interior with a full oval gallery supported by cast iron columns with foliate caps. The gallery features a wide pierced pattern and a low fronted pulpit that is centrally located in front of the organ loft at the end of the gallery. The box pews are arranged in a radial curve around the pulpit. The ceiling is adorned with good plasterwork in a compartmented design, and the entire interior is richly painted in white, blue, and gold.
