Description
The Mechanics Institute is a two-storey, five-bay building constructed in 1870, featuring a central bay that projects and is adorned with neo-classical ornamentation. It is set back from the main building line and has a small retaining wall, although the railings are missing. The ground floor includes a large central portico, which is topped by a balcony and supported by four Tuscan columns that display a pellet motif. The original baluster columns of the balcony have been replaced with plain supports, and the original rail ornaments have been removed.
The building has a deep moulded cornice and plain pilasters at the quoins. On the first floor, there are five round-headed windows with columned reveals; the central window is flanked by pilasters and features a classical head as a keystone. The side windows display heads of contemporary local industrialists. The ground floor has four slightly-segmental headed windows and modern glass doors. The date "1870" and the Otley armorial device are present on the columns of the central first-floor window.
Nos 4 to 8 form a group with Nos 1 to 11 (odd) Caley House and Nos 65 and 67 Boroughgate.
