Description

Nos 33-37 form a house, now used as one dwelling, two shops, and a store. The main block dates to the early 19th century, with a rear wing from the mid-18th century, and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of magnesian limestone ashlar, with a Welsh slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and rear extensions and additions. The architectural style is Classical. The front is two storeys and three bays, arranged symmetrically. A plinth supports the facade, and a central doorway features a moulded architrave and a pediment resting on consoles. The outer bays have been altered by the insertion of shop windows at ground level, although the first floor retains three four-pane sash windows; the outer windows have projecting moulded sills. The roof is half-hipped with stacks behind the ridge.

The left return wall reveals an earlier wing to the left, featuring a chamfered quoined doorway with a weathered keystone over the lintel, and sash windows with glazing bars above and to the left.

Inside, a quarter-turn staircase ascends to the first-floor landing, continuing to the front and rear. The staircase has an open string, scrolled brackets, and turned balusters, although the upper flight to the rear has been altered. Six-panel doors with central reeds are present throughout. A right-hand ground-floor room has a dentil cornice and is said to have contained a coved niche, now concealed; some original wooden panelling was removed to a museum. The rear wing has a fielded-panel door, a window seat, a splat-balustered staircase, and panelled room divisions on the upper floor.
