Description
Hilly Ridge House is a house dating from 1839, with alterations in the 20th century, built for Joseph Matthew. It is constructed of coursed stone with a slate hipped roof. The house has two storeys and three windows. A central stone doorway is flanked by pilasters and topped with an entablature. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, having plain sills and lintels, and a continuous sill band at the first floor level. Bracketed eaves and large square stacks are found behind the ridge. A single-storey range was added in the 20th century to the left side. The interior has not been inspected. Joseph Matthew, a brass founder and axle maker, was the original occupant; his works were located in Little Neville Street. The house is now the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Leeds University.
