Description
The former spinning mill ranges at Carr Mills, now used as light industrial units, were built in 1810 and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Designed for Abraham Rhodes, the building is constructed from coursed square gritstone with thin courses and is separately roofed in stone slates. It has an L-shaped plan with four and one storeys, featuring 14 and 8 windows, and includes a lower three-storey extension at the northeast end. The openings are plain, with stone lintels and sills, and have 20th-century casements.
Inside, the mill is reputed to have structural features from 1810 to 1850, including cast-iron beams that support stone flag floors. The parabolic beams are installed with the flange uppermost and are single span, with bulbous flanges that indicate an understanding of the bending moment across the span. Intermediate joists are set in sockets cast into the sides of the beams. Abraham Rhodes, who built Beech Grove House and associated warehouse and workshops in 1799, constructed this mill at Woodhouse Carr in 1810 while continuing to rent the workshops at Beech Grove. In 1864, Peter Laycock took over the mill.
