Description
Quarry Mount School is a former board school built in 1885 and extended in the late 20th century. Designed by Richard Adams, it features red brick with stone details and a slate roof, showcasing a Gothic Revival style. The building is two and three storeys high, comprising nine bays, and includes a four-stage clock tower with a gabled pyramid roof that separates the infants' and girls' departments on the left from the boys' department. There are five separate entrances, each with carved lintels. A modern extension has been added to the north-east. The school is a notable example of Richard Adams' work, characterized by its free Gothic Revival style, which includes mullioned windows, moulded brick panels above the carved lintels, moulded string courses, and three projecting gabled bays on the main front. Richard Adams became the School Board's architect in 1873, and this is one of his last designs, reflecting his preference for a clear vertical division between departments. The interior has not been inspected.
