Description
The roadside railings, gate piers, and gate to Sugarwell Court were likely built in 1866 for Edward Kitchen, originally serving as a tannery. The ironwork was produced by Grayson & Hardesty in Leeds. The structure features coursed squared and ashlar sandstone along with cast iron. A dwarf wall with oversailing, chamfered ashlar coping supports the railings, which have round-sectioned, corniced standards topped with orb finials, alternating with scrolled brackets attached to the wall. At the southeast end, there are square-sectioned ashlar gate piers with plinths, colonnettes at the corners, and swept, domed caps. The gate includes spiked rods, a small pedestrian opening, and a rolling-wheel at the closing end. Rebuilding was in progress at the time of the survey. This structure is included for its group value.
