Description
This is a mid-19th century house, originally a single dwelling, now divided into two houses at 1 and 1A Providence Avenue, Woodhouse Carr, Leeds. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays. A central entrance is reached by six stone steps, leading to a six-panel door with a fanlight set within a stone surround of attached columns, brackets and a segmental-arched cornice. The ground floor and first-floor windows are 4-pane sashes, with a first-floor sill band. A rebuilt stack is located at the left end of the roof, projecting forward of the ridge.
The interior of the houses is said to feature a stone staircase in No.1A, partially cantilevered with curved soffits, wrought-iron patterned balusters, and a spiral-ended handrail. No.1 has several marble fire surrounds. Both houses contain moulded cornices and Classical-detailed woodwork around doors and windows. Large stone-paved cellars are present, with inner ranges featuring brick barrel-vaults on stone walls, potentially indicating the remains of an earlier building.
The house was likely 'Delph House', as shown on the 1850 Ordnance Survey map, situated near the Woodhouse Sandstone quarries. Later alterations, including the insertion of a fanlight over the door, changes to the door surround, and replacement window glazing bars, likely date from the addition of a terraced row to the east.
