Description

The stables and cottage range, located approximately 50 metres east of Gledhow Manor, were built around 1903 by SD Kitson and FW Bedford for Major Bagnal of Kirkstall Forge, with stable fittings supplied by the St Pancras Iron Company. Constructed in brick with a Flemish bond pattern, the building features a stone moulded string course at the first-floor level and a grey tile hipped roof.

This long L-shaped structure is one and a half storeys high and consists of, from left to right, a two-bay cottage, a recessed bay with a carriage arch, a loose box, stabling for four horses, another cottage with an angled entrance, a projecting two-bay tack-room, and a coach-house/garage range with a glazed canopy. Many of the small-pane windows are boarded over. Notable architectural features include the cottage doorway with a canopy on curved brackets, a canted bay window, a segmental arch made of clay tiles, a wide loose-box door with a segmental brick arch, a stable door with sidelights under a wide tile arch, and a hay loft entrance above with flanking windows. There is also a corner doorway in an added glazed porch supported by a cast-iron column. The entrances to the coach house have been altered.

The building has deep modillion eaves cornices, with the eaves height rising with the slope of the ground, and features moulded brick stacks and a ventilator over the hay loft. Inside, the left end cottage retains its original cast-iron fire surround on the ground floor, while the loose box and stables include original fittings such as panelled cast-iron partitions with ball finials, feeding troughs, mangers, a corner cupboard, and a feed shute.
