Description
This is a group of three monuments located approximately 3 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St. Peter, dating from the mid-18th century and made of sandstone. The monuments are arranged in a row from north to south as follows:
(i) The first slab commemorates Jane, wife of John Hird, who died in 1750, and John Hird himself, who died in 1751. It features good lettering with raised and decorated dates set in sunk panels.
(ii) The second slab is dedicated to John Hird, who died in 1775. It has a decorated arched surround with a shouldered head and a scallop keystone, along with elaborately carved winged angel heads in the spandrels. This slab is placed on another slab.
(iii) The third slab honors John Hird, the second son of John Hird, who died in January 1753, and John Hird, the third son, who died in August 1753. It displays elegant lettering with raised and decorated dates in sunk panels.
