Description
There are two chest tombs located approximately 2 metres east of the Church of St Mary. These tombs date from the mid-19th century and are made of finely-carved ashlar stone. Both tombs feature corner balusters, moulded fielded side panels with paterae, a fluted frieze, and a deep roll-moulded top slab that includes fine lettering.
The larger northern tomb commemorates John Robinson of Thorp Stapleton, who died in 1834, and his wife, Mary, who died in 1864. It also memorializes William Robinson of Knostrop, who died in 1873, and John Henry Waite, grandson and son of Thomas Waite 'of thorphall colliers', who died in 1888, along with Mary, the daughter of John, who died in 1896.
The smaller tomb honors Walter, who died in 1851, Alfred, who died in 1863, and John William, who died in 1873, all sons of William and Harriet Robinson of Knostrop Road, as well as John Henry Waite, grandson, who died in 1886.
