Description

The Lower Wortley Community Centre, originally the Lower Wortley Primary School, was built in 1876 by Richard Adams for the Leeds School Board. This former board school is designed in the Gothic Revival style and features red brick with stone details and a slate roof. The building has three bays and is two bays deep, situated on a steeply sloping site, making the front single storey and the rear a two-storey block with a parallel roof.

The central bay of the front elevation projects forward and has a gabled design with a three-light transom and mullion window. This window is flanked by cusped lancets and quatrefoils above, all under a hoodmould, with gable coping and carved kneelers. The flanking bays contain entrances with mullioned overlights and cross-windows. The roof features gable copings and a large ridge stack to the left, with another stack positioned forward of the ridge centre.

At the rear, the two-storey block was likely added around 1885 when a larger block to the west was constructed. This section has an arcaded ground floor, which was formerly a covered playground, along with buttresses and three-light mullion and transom windows. The interior has not been inspected. The property also includes attached railings and gate piers with gates.
