Description
This is a late 19th-century garden ornament located approximately 40 meters west of the fountain in Armley Park, Leeds. It consists of a glazed terracotta plaque set in an artificial stone mound. The plaque measures about 1 meter long and features a Classical female winged figure in high relief, with one foot balanced on a crowned winged mask. The figure's hands support a vase adorned with a grotesque mask and flowers. The tile border around the plaque depicts birds and fruit in shallow relief, using shades of blue and brown. The plaque was fired as a single piece and is one of a pair. Currently, it is incorporated into a hedge, with the mound overgrown with ivy. It is likely a product of the Burmantofts factory and may have been placed here when the park was established around 1897.
