Description

This boundary stone, dated 1812, is located on Stonegate Road in Meanwood. It was erected by Joseph Oates of Meanwood House. The stone is a monolithic gritstone block, approximately 1.5 meters high and 0.6 meters wide. The south face of the stone is smoothed and features an inscription in Italic capitals that reads: 'NEC. SE/ COGNOS'T./ TERRAE/ VERT.S/ ANNIS/ J. OATES.P./ AD 1812', which translates to 'Neither do the lands know themselves in the turning of the years'. Joseph Oates, who inherited Carr House in 1779, undertook significant rebuilding and land improvement in the area.
