Description

Carr Manor House is a large house built in 1881 and extended around 1904. It was designed by E.S. Prior for Thomas Clifford Allbutt, a medical doctor, with later additions by Francis Bedford for Colonel Frederick William Tannett-Walker. The house features snecked walling made of dressed millstone grit and has slate roofs, showcasing a Vernacular Revival style. It is asymmetrical and has two storeys with attics.

The south front has five gables, with the two on the right set back and the central gable projecting. The left two gabled bays are likely the additions by Bedford. The entrance is adorned with a stepped hoodmould, and the ground floor has mullion and transom windows, while the upper floors feature mullions and leaded lights. A sundial is positioned above the first-floor window center, and there are embattled parapets to the right, stepped gable ends, and stone chimneys with moulded cornices at each end and one forward of the ridge at the center.

At the rear, the north range connects to a courtyard through elliptical moulded arches, leading to an entrance porch with a mosaic floor. The interior is reputed to contain panelled rooms, fireplaces, and plaster ceilings, all in the Vernacular Revival style. Carr Manor was constructed on the site of Carr House, which was the home of the Oates family from 1765 to 1868. In 1914, the estate was sold to Sir Berkeley Moynihan, a surgeon in Leeds, who later became Lord Moynihan. The Leeds Corporation acquired the property in 1938 to serve as lodgings for High Court Judges when they were sitting in Leeds.
